The problem

You cannot tell what is working,
so you cannot stop what is not.

Getting tracking in place is a few hours of work, and it is the thing that makes every other number trustworthy.

What it looks like

Does this sound familiar?

Somebody asks where your customers come from and the honest answer is a shrug, or "word of mouth, mostly".

You are paying for several things at once — ads, an agency, a listing, a subscription — and you could not rank them by what they return.

When you have considered cutting one, you have not, because you could not prove it was the one to cut.

Why it happens

This is not a judgement on your work.

Not knowing has a specific and expensive consequence: it makes cutting anything feel reckless.

If you cannot prove which channel produced customers, then cancelling any of them might be cancelling the one that works. So the safest decision is always to keep paying for everything, forever. Uncertainty defaults to spending.

It also means the things that *are* working cannot be scaled with any confidence, because you cannot distinguish them from the things that merely coincided with a good month.

What it costs

Nobody sends you a bill for this.

This is the problem that hides all the others.

Every other item on this list — the missed calls, the wasted ad spend, the site that loses people — is invisible without measurement. You cannot fix what you cannot see, and you cannot even tell which of them is your biggest problem.

It is also the cheapest to fix by a wide margin. A few hours of setup, and every subsequent decision you make about money gets better.

What we do about it

The work, in order.

01

Analytics that records enquiries

Not just visits. A form submission and a phone tap are the events that matter, and most setups record neither.

02

Track calls as well as forms

For most local businesses the phone is the main channel and the least measured.

03

Connect source to outcome

Which channel produced the enquiry, not just which produced the visit.

04

One page you can actually read

A short monthly summary in plain language. A dashboard nobody opens is not measurement.

How long it takes

An honest timeline.

Days 1–2
Analytics and conversion tracking installed, then verified with a real submission — not assumed to work.
Week 1
Call tracking live.
Weeks 2–4
First clean data. Usually at least one surprise about where enquiries come from.
Month 2
Enough to make a real budget decision, with evidence behind it.
